Enrollment Workgroup solicits your help with information on moving government into the 21st century

In January 2010, at the White House Forum on Modernizing Government, President Obama noted that, “Improving the technology our government uses isn’t about having the fanciest bells and whistles on our websites – it’s about how we use the American people’s hard-earned tax dollars to make government work better for them.” Now, six months later, the newly formed Enrollment Workgroup of the Health IT Policy and Standards Committees has begun the discussion of how to bring eligibility determination and enrollment in health and human services programs into the 21st century. Privacy and Security “Tiger Team” Announces Consumer Choice Technology Hearing

The HIT Policy Committee (HITPC) invites you to attend the Privacy and Security Tiger Team’s upcoming hearing on consumer choice technology.  The Tiger Team is a workgroup which has been assigned the task of analyzing and providing recommendations on privacy and security issues on an expedited basis to the HITPC, and ultimately to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. Using Health IT to Eliminate Disparities: A Focus on Solutions

The meaningful use (MU) of electronic health records (EHRs) has great potential to improve the quality, efficiency and safety of health care. If we are not careful, however, benefits may disproportionately accrue to those best positioned to implement and use new technologies. HIT Policy Committee 4/21: Meeting Summary

On April 21st, the HIT Policy Committee held a meeting in Washington, DC. To begin, Paul Tang, the Chair of the Committee and the Chief Medical Information Officer at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, and George Hripcsak, the Co-Chair of the Committee and a Department of Biomedical Informatics Chair at University of Columbia, gave a Meaningful Use Workgroup update. Dr. Tang began a brief discussion of the Patient/Consumer Engagement hearing held on Tuesday 4/20 in Washington DC. (more…)

Creating a Vision for Engaging Patients and Families Through the Meaningful Use of Health IT

The meaningful use of patient-facing e-health applications has great potential to improve the quality and efficiency of health and health care. Particularly for people with chronic conditions, research demonstrates that patient activation, chronic care self-management, and shared decision making with their clinicians can have a substantial impact on effectively managing their health. This post is now closed for comments.  We appreciate your input on the Strategic Framework.  Your comments will be reviewed by the Workgroup and considered as it prepares its final draft.

The Health IT Policy Committee’s Strategic Plan Workgroup was charged to develop recommendations to ONC for consideration as it updates the 2008 Federal Health IT Strategic Plan. The workgroup, with input from the full policy committee and the public, has produced a draft, which will be the subject of a listening session on April 6.  The draft Framework is posted for public comment. On March 17th, the HIT Policy Committee held a meeting in Washington, DC. Dr. Blumenthal opened the meeting with a few words about the criticality of the work to come: “Every issue on the agenda today is fascinating and complex and important….You continue to be the foundation for a lot of the inspiration and direction of the Office of the National Coordinator and federal HIT policy.” (more…)

HIT Policy Committee 2/17: Meeting Summary

The HIT Policy Committee gathered for its second meeting of the year on February 17th in Washington, DC. The majority of the meeting time was dedicated to discussing recommendations of the Meaningful Use Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) and Standards and Certification Interim Final Rule (IFR). Four Committee workgroups presented recommendations for the existing criteria, to better enable the electronic health records (EHR) incentive program to achieve its objectives and facilitate progress toward the ultimate goal of improving health and health care of all Americans.
